The UK government released its white paper on AI regulation on Wednesday 29 March 2023.
The white paper describes a flexible, sector-specific approach to AI governance using five principles:
- safety, security and robustness
- appropriate transparency and explainability
- fairness
- accountability and governance
- contestability and redress.
The government wants to strengthen the UK's position as a global leader in AI through their approach to regulation. The aim is to make sure the UK is the best place to develop and use AI technologies.
This approach might impact the work of existing regulators and enforcement agencies. For example, the Health and Safety Executive. There will be a need for tailored, context-specific approaches to suit the way AI is being used in working environments.
