Continuing professional development (CPD)
Maintain and develop your professional skills and knowledge
CPD requirements by membership grade
| Membership grade | CPD hours per year |
|---|---|
| Technical Member (TechIOSH) | 30 hours |
| Certified Member (CertIOSH) | 30 hours |
| Chartered Members and Fellows (CMIOSH and CFIOSH) | 30 hours, plus ethical practice e-learning |
| Affiliate and Student Members | Not mandatory, but encouraged for your career development |
Your CPD year starts from the date you joined IOSH (new members) or your membership renewal date (if you’ve renewed your membership).
You won’t need to complete the full CPD requirement if you’ve been in your grade for less than six months. Your full 12-month CPD cycle begins from your next renewal date.
Annual CPD audits
A sample of members are selected for CPD audits. If you're chosen, we’ll check your CPD record to make sure it meets your requirements.
How CPD works
You login and record all your CPD activities in IOSH Blueprint. Follow these four steps to stay on track.
-
Assess
Benchmark your skills across behavioural, core and technical areas. Identify where you want to grow and create a personal development plan (PDP).
-
Learn
Choose activities that match your development priorities. This could be formal courses, attending conferences, reading guides or watching webinars. Do whatever helps you develop in the areas you’ve identified.
-
Record
Log what you’ve done in Blueprint. You’ll need to record the activity title, time spent and a reflection on what you learned and how you’ll use it.
-
Review
At the end of the year, review your CPD record. Make sure you’ve done your hours and that your entries show real learning and application.
Quick answers
-
When do I record CPD?
You can record activities as you go or save them up to do a few at a time. Regular logging makes it easier to stay on top of your requirements.
-
Do I use a form?
No, you record everything in Blueprint, our professional development online management system for IOSH members.
-
What counts as CPD?
Any learning that improves your competence as a health and safety professional. This might be through work-based learning, other professional activities and volunteering, formal or self-directed learning.
-
What happens if I’m selected for a CPD audit?
We’ll check your CPD record in Blueprint to make sure it meets your grade requirements.
“If you’ve not started building your CPD portfolio yet, what’s stopping you? By adopting some planning and structure to your approach, it can become embedded into your work practices. Before you’re aware, you’ve already achieved your mandatory 30 hours of recording without having to try to undertake additional work to complete this.”
