Request an upgrade

Use this form to progress to Technical or Certified membership

Before you start

Upgrading to Technical or Certified membership is a robust and consistent assessment of your qualifications and experience – not just a form to fill in. Here’s what the process involves and what you’ll need to have ready.

Gather your documents

This is the most important step. Missing or incomplete documents are the most common reason upgrades are delayed.

  • You will need:

    • CV/resumé with at least one year of health and safety experience
    • IOSH accredited level three qualification certificate (including certificate number)
    • Module page(s), or unit transcript and unit certificates (if applicable), or results notification letter
  • You will need:

    • CV/resumé with at least two years of safety and health experience
    • IOSH-accredited level six or seven final certificate (including certificate number)
    • Module page(s), or unit transcript and unit certificates (if applicable), or results notification letter

Contact your awarding body – they can usually resupply them. Check the back of your certificate for the certificate number, as awarding bodies sometimes change where they print it.

Prepare your CV

Your CV needs to work differently here than it would for a job application. We’re assessing your experience, so we need specific detail – not a highlights reel. It is important to:

  • list your health and safety experience by role, not by project
  • include employer name, job title, and start and end dates in mm/yyyy format.
  • describe what you actually did – not just outcomes (for example: “wrote and reviewed fire evacuation policies” not “improved safety culture”)
  • explain your level of responsibility and input in each activity.

A standard job-application CV is rarely enough. If we can’t assess your experience from what you provide, we'll need to come back to you – which adds time to your application.
