An experienced leader with a background in research, development and regulation has been appointed Chair of IOSH’s Board of Trustees.

Meanwhile, four new trustees have also been appointed to the IOSH Board.

Ruth Boumphrey will become Chair on 27 May, taking over from Bobby Chakravarthy. Bobby has been interim Chair since Professor Peter Bonfield stepped down last year to take up a new role as Chair of the Property Flood Resilience Taskforce for the UK Government.

Ruth is Chief Executive of Lloyd’s Register Foundation, an independent global charity with a mission to enhance the safety of life and property and advance public education.

She is also a Non-executive Director of Cefas – the Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences – a UK Government appointment, and Commissioner for the National Preparedness Commission.

“I’m delighted to be the next Chair of IOSH’s Board of Trustees, and look forward to working with IOSH and its members around the world in delivering its vision of a safe and healthy world of work. This vision is very close to my heart and aligns with our mission at Lloyd’s Register Foundation, so I hope to bring and share knowledge, networks and insights that help amplify IOSH’s impact globally.”

The other four new trustees are Arlette Anderson and Sonia Whiteley, who are member trustees, and David Auger and Stuart Stockley, who are independent trustees. They take up their roles with immediate effect.

Arlette is a Chartered Fellow of IOSH and the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment. During her career, she has led and influenced cultural change in large multinational companies. She has also been part of the IOSH Performance and Development Committee.

Sonia is also a Chartered IOSH Fellow and is Vice-Chair of the Essex Branch. She has more than two decades of experience in occupational safety and health (OSH), with her current role being Head of Health and Safety at the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development.

David has more than 35 years of experience in finance and is a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales. He has worked with a variety of manufacturing companies and was Chief Finance Officer and Board Advisor to a multinational billion-dollar shipping group.

Stuart has more than 20 years’ experience in senior roles in the building materials market in both the UK and Europe. He has worked across manufacturing and distribution channels in the disciplines of commercial, operations, sales and marketing, category management and e-commerce.

As they move into the roles, the terms of three long-standing trustees have come to an end. They are Simon Hatson, John Green and David Blower. IOSH thanks them all and Bobby Chakravarthy, who will remain as an independent trustee once Ruth Boumphrey becomes Chair.
