IOSH President Kelly Nicoll gives thanks for volunteers and urges occupational safety and health professionals to look after themselves as well as others in her final blog of 2024.

Hope everyone is looking forward to the holiday break. The holidays can be a wonderful time of year, filled with festivities and celebrations, good food and time with family and friends. It’s a time for reflection and gives us all an opportunity to rest and reset for the year ahead. I’m certainly looking forward to catching up with friends, spending time with my family, celebrating the successes of 2024 and preparing for a busy 2025.

I want to take a moment to express my heartfelt gratitude to all our dedicated volunteers. Your unwavering support, commitment and passion have made a profound impact throughout the year. Thank you for giving your time and energy to help others, and for making IOSH a stronger, more compassionate community.

I cannot wait to see what you all do in 2025.

Support

I also recognise that, for some, this season can be particularly hard. This year let’s remind ourselves of the importance of looking after our mental and emotional wellbeing.

Taking time to rest, setting healthy boundaries and asking for help when needed are all vital steps in caring for ourselves.

“It’s also crucial to be mindful of those around us. A simple check-in with friends, family, or colleagues can make a huge difference in someone’s day. We can help create a supportive environment by listening with empathy and offering kindness.”

Job role

As we navigate this season, it's important to give ourselves grace and take moments to recharge. It’s okay to step back when needed, and it’s okay to not be okay sometimes. We’re all in this together. Taking care of our own wellbeing enables us to better support others.

Let’s continue to create a safe and caring environment, both within our organisations and beyond.

Wishing you all peace, joy and good health this holiday season. May the new year bring you the strength and resilience to face any challenges, the ability to find joy in the small things and hope that 2025 is a successful and fulfilling year for you all.
