The chance to promote local occupational safety and health communities saw more than 400 members apply to join one of our Branch committees this year.

Our network of branches strengthens our relationships with the safety and health industry around the world.

Branches are a chance to meet your fellow professionals, exchange ideas and hear the latest news and opinions. Each branch has an executive committee that organises a programme of events and activities.

The process for applying to join a Branch committee was different this year. It was through co-option rather than election. This change allows us to complete a review that will give committees more flexibility in the future.

There was a positive response with 100 members attending an online drop-in session in January. And, within one hour of launching the application form, we had more than 100 members apply for a branch committee role.

"It's been great to see IOSH members gain a better understanding on how to volunteer and get involved with their local branch."

Volunteering opportunities

Volunteering is not just about giving back to the profession and contributing to our vision of a safe and healthy world of work. Our volunteers tell us they:

  • progress in  their careers through broadened skills, experience and expertise
  • enjoy networking opportunities with fellow professionals
  • increase confidence and self-esteem -  they feel valued and enjoy being part of a team.

I was keen to join the East Midlands Branch as IOSH has done a lot for me professionally and I wanted to give a bit back as a volunteer. Now I've been appointed chair, I intend to put on some interesting events, including guest speakers and will include current members in my aim to drive the branch forwards. I also want to welcome new members on board from the region to grow the branch.

Contact your local branch, district or section if you want to volunteer with them. You could offer to speak at a branch event on a specialist topic or join our mentoring programme to help others develop their career.
