Business assurance
Evaluate, improve and certify your safety culture, starting with our self-assessment software
When your employees work safely and healthily, your business reaps the benefits. Our flexible business assurance programme can help you to attain and maintain high health and safety standards that will bring you long-term business success.

What’s on offer?
Our self-assessment tool helps you to generate an accurate picture of your health and safety status, under three major headings. You identify the areas where you will carry out improvements, under your own initiative. Or you can opt for our full business assurance programme, with the support of an IOSH-approved consultant.
At the end of this supported process, you receive a certification of your organisation’s health and safety maturity: bronze, silver, gold or platinum. This gives your staff, clients and investors a clear sign of your seriousness about health and safety – and gives you a benchmark for further improvement.
We’re offering an extended free trial to businesses who want to see for themselves what our business assurance programme can do for them. Sign up now and your trial will last until 29 August 2025.
How does each stage work?
Our IOSH for Business experts have developed a three-stage programme. You can do the full programme or focus only on the stages that have most impact for your business.
The first stage starts with a baseline assessment using our business assurance tool. We support you to use this self-assessment software.
Your baseline assessment provides:
- a score indicating the current level of occupational safety and health cultural maturity of your business
- a dashboard showing existing strengths and the areas where there’s an opportunity to improve.
There are three broad areas in our business assurance certification model.
- Governance and leadership: what’s required from your leaders to support good governance of occupational safety and health.
- Systems and processes: how these enable and underpin the safety and health governance and leadership.
- People and culture: assessment and monitoring to understand the impact on organisational culture.
You continue to use the self-assessment software to measure the growth of your cultural maturity over time.
In stage two, you work to strengthen the areas that were identified for improvement in the initial self-assessment.
You can do this work yourself or we can recommend an approved provider of the IOSH business assurance certification programme. They will be an experienced consultant who understands the programme and can use their knowledge to help you make improvements.
You continue to use the self-assessment software to measure the improvements.
Stage three is when we audit your occupational safety and health maturity and award your certification.
Your certificate shows the level of occupational safety and health maturity you’ve achieved and is valid for three years. There are four grades of certificate – bronze, silver, gold and platinum.
This provides you and your clients with independent assurance. You also have a method to continue to measure your occupational safety and health improvement activities over time.
Achieving your IOSH business assurance certification is just the beginning. You determine the pace and goals for achieving the level of cultural maturity that best suits your organisation.
