This session will provide an overview of legal frameworks surrounding railway-related standards, including their force, applicability and limitations.
It includes:
- some of the key legislation currently in force
- a map of what happened to all those European standards we had a couple of years ago
- an overview of Rail Safety and Standards Board (RSSB) managed standards
- how you can get involved in the drafting of standards
- where you can find help understanding standards.

Wayne Murphy, Technical and Regulatory Policy Manager, RSSB
Wayne started his railway career in 1984 as an apprentice train maintenance fitter before moving into safety management. He has worked in a variety of safety roles, writing policy, front-line management, occupational safety and health, auditing, development and delivery of safety-related training and accident investigation. He has been lucky enough to have worked across the industry for national and international train operators, large infrastructure contractors and currently for the RSSB. He attained chartership of IOSH in 2006 and, from 2006-2022, he was a tutor and then lead tutor for the Chartered Institute of Railway Operators.
